Helen
How things could change in the span of a week. Helen didnât do dates. Well, not like this, anyway. She met women in restaurants or pubs, but she never picked them up at home and bought them flowers. Were the flowers too much? They were wedged under her arm as she leaned against her car and waited for her. It was too late to hide them because Matilda was already rushing out of the door.
âAwwâ¦are those for me?â Helen had told her to dress warm, and she looked adorable in a white woollen beanie, a thick woollen scarf, and her big puffer coat.
Helen smiled sheepishly as she handed her the huge bunch of white lilies. âIf you like lilies.â
âI love them.â Matilda smiled and gave her a kiss on her cheek. âIâd better put these in water first. Iâll be right back.â
Helen touched her cheek where Matildaâs lips had been. The kiss had left a zinging sensation on her skin, and she was glowing everywhere. Her crush was intensifying by the day, she realised, and she didnât want to fight it anymore.
On the second floor of the Victorian building where Matilda lived, the lights went on, and she could see her silhouette as she arranged the flowers in a vase. Matildaâs apartment was situated in a lovely street in St Jamesâs, only a stoneâs throw from the National Gallery and Leicester Square, and no doubt premium priced. Helen suspected Matildaâs business was booming if she could afford to live here. She was also curious about how she lived; how sheâd decorated her apartment and what her mornings and nights looked like. Helenâs apartment was in an equally charming street in Pimlico, but it wasnât the cosiest of places. It was modern and minimal, and although that was how sheâd always envisaged herself living, it didnât feel like a real home. She was mainly just there to sleep, as she spent most of her precious free time at her motherâs house, which was always warm, inviting and infused with the smell of almond cakes baking in the oven.
âOkay, Iâm ready.â Matildaâs voice pulled Helen out of her thoughts, and she opened the passenger door for her. âWhere are we going?â
âKew Gardens. Itâs supposed be really pretty this time of the year, and Iâm ashamed to say that, as a Londoner, Iâve never been there.â
âMe either.â Matilda clapped her hands. âWhat a great idea.â
Helen felt relieved at her excitement. Sheâd thought long and hard about where to take Matilda, because just dinner wouldnât cut it. âThe traffic will be heavy, so I apologise upfront.â
âI donât mind.â Matilda took off her coat, pushed her seat back and made herself comfortable. âThat will give us lots of time to talk.â She glanced at Helen sideways and smiled. âSo, question. What do you like to do in your spare time?â
âI donât have spare time.â Helen grinned. âOkay, thatâs not entirely true. Outside the hectic season, I like to go to museums and galleries. I love art.
